Will an adult cat eat one of her own kittens that is, at least, six weeks old
This adult cat is about 18 months old, and has been on my property since she was born. She had one litter in the spring, which in observation, I don't think she took very good care of, since all five of them died either from starvation or other neglect. She has had another litter within the last six weeks or so. Earlier yesterday, I noticed her in the yard with a "catch." I thought perhaps it was a squirrel, but as I took a closer look when some of the other cats tried to take her prize, I found out that it was a kitten. I think it was from her own litter, but it could have been from another cat's litter that is also on our property. The adult cats are fed twice a day, so I don't know if this was deparate hunger or something else. I have heard of them eating their young shortly after birth, but not six weeks later. Any ideas . . . ? It really was rather gross to me, to say the least. Thank you for all replies.
Answers:Are you sure the kitten was dead? Often a kitten will wander from the 'nest', and the Mum will carry them back by the scruff of the neck. The kitten will go completely limp, and may appear dead to the casual observer! Once the mother lets go of the kitten it often takes a few seconds for them to start moving again. It would be very unusual for a cat to eat it's kitten so long after giving birth.
As someone else has suggested, best thing to do is see if you can find a rescue group who would be willing to neuter the cat.
Not at that age. She needs to be taken to the vet and spayed. If you don'[t want to pay for it, put her in a no kill shelter. They will do it and find her a home.
Sometimes that kind of things happens so, If you could sacrify the she cat, do it couse next time will happen again.
I already made it.
The kitten could have died and she was just taking it out of the place she stays.
to my knowledge cats aren't cannibals.
maybe the situation was not as it appeared
