Will my 6 month old kitten ever stop play biting me2007-11-25 12:33:16

This is my first cat. He's 6 months old. He "play" attacks and bites me all the time. I walk by him and he pounces my ankles. Granted, it's kind of cute..but it's also incredibly annoying. It doesn't hurt..and I know he's just playing. But is this something he will grow out of? Am I not giving him enough attention? I kind of like that he's feisty, but sometimes it's just relentless.

Answers:

It will only stop if you train him to stop. Kittens bite and play fight. They do it with their littermates, they do it with their mothers. When kittens do it with other cats, however, at some point one of the parties tires of this behavior (especially mama cats) and there are consequences (like a whack in the head or neck scruff bite from mama!) Eventually the kitten learns there is a time and place for this behavior. In a situation like yours, you don't have its mother or littermates to aid you, so you need to train it out of him.

First off you need to provide your kitten with LOTS of toys. Kitten play is important to their development. You need to provide your kitten with play and stimulation. Get some ping pong balls (cats love to chase them and they make a great sound when batted back & forth), some catnip filled mice, and most importantly get a teaser toy like "Da Bird"

( http://www.amazon.com/da-bird-interactiv. ). Never leave your cat alone with string.I've seen so many kittens and cats die from string that's become entangled in their intestines. Play with your cat often. Play with him till he's lying on his side panting in exhaustion! They love it (and you'll sleep well that night!) When your kitten goes for your hands or feet, the worst thing you can do is to yank them away. To your kitten, that is all part of the chasing game. Instead what you want to do is firmly say, "NO!" and have your hand "play dead" by making it rigid and completely still. That basically ends all of the fun for kitty.game over. Only when your kitten becomes calm should you take your hand away. If your kitty goes for the hand again, repeat the "NO!" and play dead trick. Once you are able to remove your hand without your kitty attacking, you should reward your kitten with lots of praise, hugs and kisses. At this time, grab a toy and let them have at it. They will quickly learn that your hand is no fun, they get yelled at because you disapprove, and when they behave themselves they get showered with love and more toys!
