No, all they know is that they are a little sore for a few days (males less than females). Then they happily go about living their life.
I've had neutered male cats for almost 40 years, and I can tell you that in every case, the boy did not miss "the boys!"
Each time, the cat bounced back and in a couple of days (and in some case, one day) the cat seemed oblivious of his loss.
Thomas, my neutered male, behaves just as macho as any "intact" male, in that he has an active social life (works the night shift--comes in every morning, tired and hungry, with untold tales of his exploits).
Basically, you won't see any difference. He will feel sore when you first bring him home, so you might want to confine him in the bathroom or some small space with a litterbox for the first day so he won't be jumping on tables and otherwise overdoing it.
Your cat might act funny at first but eventualy he will be the same as he is now. Yes he will probably notice that he is missing something while he is grooming himself but he will get over it in time.
They do not seem to miss it a bit. They may actually receive a bit of relief from testosterone tyranny - you know, when the hormones go berko and they just gotta-gotta-gotta go find a mate, pick a fight, get agro. Most of my past cats have been males and the two I have now are also males - both fixed. What I have always observed is they appear to calm down A LOT after they get fixed and are happier for it. Not one of them ever woke up from the operation giving me dirty looks. Not one of them behaved as if he were mad at something. And if they can talk, I'm sure they'd answer your question with, "You had something removed from my body? Oh? what?"
They do actually change personality wise.I can't really say whether or not they know if that piece of them is gone, but with the male cats that I grew up with, once they got fixed they were totally different. Not in a bad way, but their personalities changed for sure. And they don't spray! lol
