Worms in kittens2007-11-25 12:33:18

I recently adopted a kitten from the shelter and took it to my vet and my vet gave it a clean bill of health.now after discovering while cleaning its poo that I found worms in it.really disgusting. I dont know what type of worm it was. It was kind of a dirty white with a greyish tip. I called my vet and asked if they wanted me to save a stool sample and she said no that the doctor is good at knowing just by description (which my bf is pissed because he feels that they should of allowed us to bring in a stool sample). Now she tells me that there are different meds for different worms and I am worried that she may give me the wrong meds.

My question is does anyone have ideas of what type of worm it is if its noodle like dirty white and grey tip? I have another cat that is a year and 5months but has his own litter box..can he get worms just from sitting in areas the kitten sat in..also the kitten sleeps on the bed..can I get it? Please help

Answers:

From your limited description it sounds like roundworms which over 90% of all kittens and puppies have. All kittens and puppies should be dewormed at least twice with a general dewormer, 3-4 weeks apart whether or not their stools test positive for worms. The stool should be tested anyway (which makes me think you should find another vet), because the vet will want to know what type of parasites he/she is dealing with. Also, some parasites do require different dewormers. And kittens can have more than one type of parasite!
