Would a cat survive being run over by a car and what would he do

My cat has gone missing, only for a day and a half, which is unusual, but he is quite an explorer. A neighbour saw a cat being hit by a car nearby, and although he can't say it was my Odin it's quite a coincidence and I fear the worst.

Apparently both wheels of the car ran over the cat, but he got up and kept running into the school ground next to my home. I've been searching for him with no luck so far.

My question is whether a cat could survive trauma like that for long? I'm surprised he could get up and run at all and distressed to think he suffered so much alone. I also wonder what a cat's instincts would tell it to do? I'd like to think he'd have tried to get home (not far) if he could, but I've heard cats will hide when ill or injured.

It's been a day and a half so if it was him I hope he's not still out there alive, in pain and distress. I have to bring my baby home regardless, so I'd be grateful for any tips on what he might have done in the time he had left.

A similar thing happened with my cat too. We had a knock on the door and we answered to a woman who just said she'd seen a cat get hit by a car. She said she stopped and went to see if it was ok, and she said it was lying in the middle of the road. When she got near, she said it woke up and ran off, much like you cat. She gave us a collar and sure enough, it was our cat's.

We called and called for him all day, and waited up till midnight, but still no sign. Finally, as I was going to bed, I heard meowing by the door and it was him. He was bleeding from the nose and in a very sorry state but he was alive and later fully recovered.
