My father is allergic to pets, should I get rid of the pets so he can come and visit? My cat is two years old.

Answers:

you don't have to get rid of it. but taking it out of the house 5 min. before your dad arrives won't work either because pet dander will be left behind and that is what your dad is allergic to.

if your dad lives nearby and comes over often i suggest allergy medicine

however if your dad lives far away and visits only every once in a while maybe taking the cat out of the house (and leaving it with a friend) a day before and vacuuming up the couches, carpet and curtains would help. this way none of the dander that your dad is allergic to will be left around and he won't experience an allergic reaction. this is too much work if he comes over a lot and that's why i suggested allergy medicine or shots if he comes over a lot.

even if he does visit often vaccuming and bathing the cat will also help a little.

thats a hard one. it could be difficult on the cat. i had to give my kitten to my mam as i live beside a takeaway now. the move was hard on my cat and now he is depressed and shows me v little affection. i would think of keeping ur cat out of the sitting room and hoovering b4 ur dad arives. that way u have the best of both worlds

No. Your cat lives there, too. You wouldn't get rid of kids, plants, carpet, or anything else he might be allergic to. Keep the cat in your room while he is there. He might still have allergies, but its a compromise.

You might not have to give your cat away. Maybe you can take the cat to a kennel while your dad visits. Have some Benedryl handy to help with any allergies.

well if your getting rid of it for good then go to a local animal hospital or resque and just hand it over look it up on google or something where your local hospital if none that maybe ur vet -they might kno where to bring it or sell it there.

my cats are my babies and I wouldn't get rid of them if I was allergic so I sure wouldn't do it for someone visiting. Have your dad take an allergy pill before he comes or you could board them for the length of his stay. But to get rid of them completely because your dad is coming to VISIT is a little extreme

My mom is highly allergic to my cat. But this is OUR home, and my cat if FAMILY. She loves him too, just gets sick if she is around. Taking the cat out of the house may not alleviate the problem, my mom gets sick whether the cat is around or not because his fur, dander or whatever is in the house. There are dander remover sprays and wipes that when used every day reduce the amount of dander on your cat.
