Would you sedate your cats to transport them2007-11-25 12:33:24

I am driving 2,300 miles with 4 cats. Two of which are very high strung. I have never sedated any of my animals before but considering this is such a long trip would it be okay? I am stopping every 6 to 8 hours and renting a motel room. I don't want them stressed out but I don't like giving medication to them either. Any suggestions?

I have 2 young cats that travel 5 hours no problem in their carry baskets am going to take them on 1200miles at christmas I dont sedate them if you can train them to the harness they can have pit stops along the way I f they do get upset on the trip try covering them over with a cloth and keep they in the dark they do sl;eep a lot anywaygood luck with the trip they will survive without medication

Either you or your cats should be sedated for attempting such a trip. If it were me, I would not stop every 6-8 hours. I would make the drive as quickly as possible. You should give them something to relax them. It will be better for them both on the trip, and when you get to your destination.
I would ask the vet to prescribe some type of sedative for each cat and then use it when needed. Also I wanted to ask if you had called ahead to the hotels/motels you are staying at, I came across country in July and I have a dog, the motels accepted dogs but would not allow cats, spraying etc. just a thought for you to think about.
If you're a bit worried about giving your cats medication to keep them calm you could try them on something natural like Rescue Remedy (from the chemist) to keep them relaxed. I'd see how it goes with a shorter car drive or something first to determine wether you really need to give them something stronger to keep them sedated for their own good. Many people successfully move huge distances with their pets, maybe your vet may be able to give you some ideas too, good luck.
That is so cool! I'm thinking of doing the same with 7 soon! I don't think I'd sedate them, I'd try to learn to put up with the meowing, and they will probably stop & relax after awhile. Take lots of pics.what an interesting trip it will be!
You do need to know how they are on car rides. I am in Texas and with the hurricanes last year we tried to take ours with us when we evacuated, but they do not like car rides at all. If we could have sedated them we would have because they were trying to get out so bad they were starting to hurt them selves. So I would do this if your cats are like that on car rides, but if you have never taken them in the car anywhere give it a try first to see how they react.
well this is something i would discuss with vet.if you think they can make it without sedation that is what i would do but you know your cats better than anyone
I can tell Shirazza is from Britain. Rescue Remedy is a combination of five Bach flower essences. Dr. Bach was an English physician in the 19th century who devoted his life to developing his 38 flower essence to treat the emotional base of his patients' illnesses.
