my new puppy and my cat dont get along please help2007-11-25 12:23:15

i just got a new rottwiler puppy (hes 8 weeks old) and my cat hates him i have two other dogs that the cat gets along great with i just need to how i can help them get along better

Just give them time -- cats generally don't like new arrivals in their home (animal or people). I have 5 cats, and it took them a few months to get used to my puppy.

play games with both of them and when you see them fighting, stop them and separate them. the more they play together, the more they'll get used to each other and won't fight.

You need to stop being an adult and get down and play with your pets. That way they both will know they are equal. They will soon forget their problems when they feel equal. It works. i have a 25 year old cat and she got on with a Yorkie and a buck rabbit in her time and is not bothered by any other pet

Well, I have tons of experiance with animals..you should try putting your puppy in a kennel and let the cat approach your puppy in the kennel. That way your puppy can't hurt the cat. Or vice-versa. Then after that see if they get along. If they don't then whenever your puppy is bothering the cat just disipline him. And if he is being good reward him. Or try simply playing with them both at the same time and see how they get along.

Start of very slowly just have them in same room for a few minutes and give both treats at the end. Gradually increase the time with still giving treats at the end of the sessions.

it's just going to take them a little time to get used to each other. I brought a dog home from the animal shelter a couple months ago and it took my cats a while to not hiss at it everytime they saw it. they are just used to the other ones. they know your other two dogs aren't going to hurt them. they need to learn that about your new one.

You just have to give it time. I just got a new puppy and I already had two cats. They have started to play together after two weeks. They bonded together over food. It was sweet.

The puppy is a little more rambunctious with the cat, eventually the puppy will calm down more and it should work itself out. The cat will train it properly with what it can and can't get away with.
