new kitten - what do we need to do and buy2007-11-25 12:24:06

we are going to have a kitten in a couple of weeks, what do we need to do or buy for her, apart from the cat litter and tray? What vaccinations or other medical stuff do we need to worry about? How much would it cost? Thanks!

Answers:

You will need kitten food - be sure the food has all the right nutrients for a kitten - purina kitten chow is generally a good choice.

Food dish and water bowl

plenty of toys.

brush/comb

someplace where the kitten will feel safe - maybe a little bed - remember, cats feel safe in enclosed areas. there are these cubes that have an opening on one end or 2 ends.cats love those.

scratching post - im assuming you dont want your furnature to be destroyed

nail clippers - be sure to get the kind that has the stopper on the one end so you cant cut them too short

enclosed litter pan & scooper

cat carrier.when you go pick the kitten up, make sure you have blankets or towels down in the carrier so they dont feel as scared

as far as the Vet goes.

you will need to have HIV and Leukemia tests done

2 Distemper shots before the kitten is 6 months old - once at 4-6 weeks and another around 4 months

Stool Sample

Rabies shot

You may also have to de-worm your kitten - which is just a pill that they take once or twice.

You will then need to spay/neuter the kitten by 6 months.

All vet costs are different. My vet charges $15 per shot and $70 for the spay/neuter. Shes pretty cheap - Some vets can charge up to $200 for the spay/neuter.
