should I adopt another cat from my local SPCA2007-11-25 12:25:47

NO question about it that I'm going to adopt from the SPCA but I'm in the middle of waiting for an Abyssinian cat/kit to appear at the shelter. I already have a 2 yr. old spayed female cat who is a little used to being the only cat of the household. she's been with her brother before and my parents new kitten (both were neutered). so she really has no problem warming up to a new addition. I have the money and time for a new cat but should I adopt one now or not? should I adopt a male or female? either way, he/she WILL be spayed/neutered. my female is strictly an indoor only cat and so will my new Aby. my 2 yr. old is well up to date on all her vaccinations and is very healthy rigth now. my new kitty will be up to date as well. so, should I adopt now? from experience I know that she won't have much trouble him/her but I'm not sure if the new comer will have a problem with her or not? since that is questionable, should I go ahead and get a kitten instead? Thanks!

I say definitey get another kitty! Get a boy whose a little younger than yours - boys and girls get along well. Although I love kittens, I always feel sorry for the older cats at the SPCA because so many people think that they won't adjust as well as kittens to a new environment.

As your girl is quite alright with other cats, this is what I suggest when you are at the shelter. If you like one, take him out of his cage, and put him next to the cage next door to see what the reaction is to another kitty. I did this when I went to get my second, and she just walked up to the mesh and tried to have a good sniff at the other cat. So I knew that she wasn't going to be afraid or try and fight with my boy. They've been together a month now - and I can't believe it took me so long to get him a friend, he's so much happier now (and has lost a little weight too!)
