what harm will i do to my cat if i vaccinate him again2007-11-25 12:28:17

i was given a kitten as a birthday gift from my uncle and he told me she was vaccinated and everything. but i am still worried what if she isn't , i mean i know my uncle too well.will i harm the kitten if i vaccinate him again? might i add that she scratches me all the time!

Ask you uncle what vet did the vaccination. If he can't tell you or produce the papers or if the vet has no record of vaccination then you might consider having your vet revaccinate. Kittens need a series of three space about two to three weeks apart. So another one probably would do no damage.

You are not going to "get" anything from your kitten scratching you. Young kittens haven't developed enough neurologically to have control over the retraction and extension of their claws.

The nails are very sharp on a kitten and you need to learn how to keep those little needle-like implements trimmed down on a regular basis. When you take kitty to the vet they will show you how to do it. Best to get her used to it now too then there won't be any resistance when she's older. Someone here may give you a website with diagrams on how to do it. Not hard at all.

No it will not hurt him. But just ask your uncle for a copy of the vet bill where she was vaccinated. So you will have a record.

As for scratching you? Clip her nails.

Might run a fever, sluggishness and off diet for a few days. Keep only ice water available and some bland baby cereal mixed with a little baby-food liver for eating if it happens. Take to your closest vet if anything more serious occurs or fever lasts longer than 48 hours. The scratching will probably leave when she feels better and acclimatizes to you and your home. Kittens have to have shots at 4 week intervals anyways. Its not just one set of shots.So if he had just one set of shots the kitten needs then again after 4 weeks

It will not hurt your kitten to get vaccinated again. Infact, most kittens need several series of vaccinations or "boosters."

As for the scratching, clip his nails. If you are not sure how, ask your veterinarian when you take him for his vaccinations. If the kitten is not cooperative, you can wrap him in a towel and pull one foot out at a time to trim the nails. You may also want to invest in a scratch post to focus the kitten's scratching on something besides you.
