Hi there.when a cat begins to inappropriately soil areas around the home it generally is indicative of a urinary tract infection (UTI). Cats will associate the pain of urinating with the litter box and then avoid it believing it will not hurt to go elsewhere. Consider contacting your vet to have a urinalysis done in order to receive treatment of antibiotics for the infection.

She also may be in the beginning states of kidney failure (known as Chronic Renal Failure) which can contribute to this problem. This requires immediate attention as special diet and hydration is critical.

I don't have an answer to your question, but just wanted to let you know that after my cat turned 9 years old, she started going to the bathroom on my rugs, and carpet. She's now a garage kitty, and does fine with a litter box in the garage, because there is no rugs, or carpet.
If she's just starting this, I'd have her checked out for a UTI (urinary tract infection).
Have you changed litter lately? She may have developed an allergy to the litter or have a bladder infection.
Shes old, I would guess she is having problems with her kidneys. I would have her blood tested right away. My chihuahua's both had kidney disease, and could not stop peeing everywhere (they were born with it though). That would be my guess. Get her blood tested right away! Hopefully thats not it. Good Luck
Or maybe trying out a new litter product.
Maybe the carpet has a smell she is trying to cover up. As cats age they also tend to do this more and more. We had a cat that once she was about 15 years old, started to pee on a couch noone sat on. One day some unlucky person did and ewwwwww!
You might want to try a softer litter, perhaps those pine shreddings for hamsters. Cats don't like the smell of citrus fruits, so I'd recommend scenting the areas she does her business with a perfume like such. Also, the boxes might be too tall if she's an older cat--there are dog litter boxes which are shorter.

Might wanna make sure she's healthy, too. Cats get bladder problems alot when they're older. My older cats, RIP, had such. Good luck with this one.

UTI
Definetly some good answers on here.

Cats sometimes stop going in their boxes with they have a Urinary Tract Infection. My cat did.

This could also be a problem with the kidneys as well.

If you can take your cat to the vet they will probably be able to pin point the problem for you.

After 12 years of using the littler I would definetly suspect something is up.

Hope your kitty is feeling better soon.
