All felines are nocturnal when given a chance, I say when given a chance because both Oscar and Felipe (my cats) go out all day long and by six o'clock are safely inside roaming through the house.
Nocturnal activities are common in felines, since they can see in the dark it is the perfect time of day to hunt and explore the neighborhood without the risks involved with daylight exploration, plus if your cat is male he might be looking for a girlfriend.

Keeping your cat inside is safer than letting him roam..but if you're going to continue to let him roam, PLEASE make certain he's neutered. If he's not, he's also out huntin' for poon..and there are enough unwanted cats and kittens in this world.
If he's going out every night and drinkin' with his buddies, don't ever have him declawed. He'll need 'em.
