why does the female cat growls at her 1yr old boy2007-11-25 12:32:28

my mates female cat is 2 yrs old and she gave birth to a boy now hes 1 yrs old nshe wont let him near her she whacks him n growls at him hes been miserable and not himself for the past week n it just breaks my heart why do cats treat there babies like that?

it is momma cat's way of telling her son that he is a big boy now and to leave her alone. The son will be confused or disappointed for a while - but he'll soon bounce back - as soon as he realize3s how wonderful it is to be independent of momma!

No, seriously, this behavior from a mother cat is normal. She's saying to her grown kitten: "I've carried you; fed you; licked you clean; played with you; taught you how to hunt and be a cat; and now you're grown and bigger than me. so buzzz off!"

She just wants to be left alone. Maybe she's not feeling like herself and she needs a little space. Kittens can be a little demanding and I bet she's just fed up. She'll either get over it eventually or he'll learn to leave her alone. Good luck.

Cause its time for him to leave her nest, she may be ready for a new batch. He is too old and she dosent want to bothered with him anymore, that is how cats get there babies to leave and go on their own in the wild. Suprised shes just doing this now usually they do it when the kittens are about 8-12 weeks old

It's fairly common for female cats to be aggressive in rejecting kitten from a former litter. I hope you will spay her if you haven't, otherwise the male kitten (if not neutered) may want to mate with her.

its because she isnt in heat. I hope she is spayed and he is neutered - she is still being a parent and teaching him that she wants to be left alone
