why my cat scratches the litter box instead of the litter when he poops2007-11-25 12:33:09Answers:
its called scratch and sniff.
Do you wash your hands after you crap?
my cat does that too.
I think he is just trying to wipe the "ick" off of his paws.
Doesn't want to dirty his claws?
Don't know, but my cat does the same thing. He scratches the side of his box instead of the litter. Strange.
haha! dont know why but one of my cats does the same thing!
because they feel more confortable doing in it.
My cats do the same thing. Typical cat behavior. Why? It's anybody's guess.
Maybe he is trying to tell you that the box is not big enough!
i dont know but my cat does the same thing. maybe they're searching for something beyond the litter to bury their poop with or something. cats dont make sense sometimes.
it thinks it did good it's like a pat on the back
he's probably not train next time he does it take him back where he pooped and make him cover it up
Good question, my mom's cat used to scratch out side the box before she would get out! But she was really weird!
my cat scratches the AIR outside of the litter box.who knows! I get a good laugh though
His aim is a little off. He knows he just made some serious business and can smell it. Instinct tells him to cover it. You may have to intervene and scoop it up for him or he may be there for awhile.
their scent markers are on their feet so when they do the scratching on the box they are marking their territory
Mine does the same thing not sure why but after he does this he has no litter on his paws lol
The cat is stressed! There is more strain for the cat to dig something solid rather than clay.
One of my four cats does this as well. Of course this is the same cat who balances three and sometimes all four feet on the very edge of the litter box to poop. Sometimes cats do weird things for no apparent reason other than they are crazy.
I dont know. Cats are animals of mystery with an intelligence exceeded only by Gorillas and/or similar animal.
There are glands in a cat's paw (and face among other places) that secret their scent. Cat's are possessive animals. He is likely marking it as his (which he also does just by using it). Big cat's in the wild will not only deficate on their territory but will also mark up trees and such with their claws. I suppose it's a way of writing thieir name on something they feel they own.
All cats do that, it's just a reaction for them to have that motion. If you have ever seen a cat go for a "poop" outside they will scratch anything that is around them( the wall, or cement for examples) I have a litter box that is enclosed and my cats scratch the sides of the box. Its normal.
It's normal most cats do nothing to worry about my cats do the same thing they dont want all that litter stuck on there pawls and nails leave it be and don't worry about it the cat is fine and nothing is wrong with it
I have a 13 yr old cat who does this and it drives me bananas. I put newspapers under the box in my bedroom because my 22 yr old cat doesn't always get all her pee in the box and the newspaper absorbs the urine. They share my bedroom at night and when Sylvie goes she scratches at the newspaper after she has used the box. It reminds me I will have to get up soon and I still want to snuggle under the covers.
