cats will usually come back, dont worry get a dog
he will come back when he is hungry
of course he will come back.cats grow used to routines such as eating in the same place each day or sleeping in the same place. within a day or two he will come back.don't worry about it, it'll all be fine

Your kitty is afraid and you said hurt. Animals act oddly when they are hurt or afraid. Keep giving him food and water BUT if this areas is close to your home and he can see the house once you are sure he is ok stop feeding him there and put out food and water at your home only.
It sounds like he has been outside before so I would think he knows his way home.
