will my cat ever get use to these kittens2007-11-25 12:33:15

i have 2 kittens not sure how old they are but my cat that is older hisses at the kittens and runs from them! will she ever get use to them or will she keep doing what she is doijng?

Answers:

Supervise this situation very carefully, it's a dangerous difficulty. You'll have to be alpha cat, you'll need to let your mature cat know that she is to accept the kittens. She'll get used to them quickly, even if she doesn't really like it at first, if you start small and build.

Start in a small room (read no escape routes) & keep a kitten carefully held in your hand, introduce to the adult without letting go. Do your best to provide positive re-enforcement with good reactions, & don't tolerate negative responses. Nip that in the bud quickly.

alright for one if the kittins are REALLY small keep them away from your cat. she will get used to them once they are older and running about. my fat cat got used to 2 kittins we brought in and bottle fed. we just recently brought in 2 other 1 week old kittins and she isnt hissing as much. be pateint and watch them very carefully. we had an accident with the dog and ended up losing both one kittin AND the dog (put it to sleep. doggie go night night)

your cat is too mature & probably spoiled. If she was a single cat then it take about 2 weeks for them to get used to each other. Or your older cat will ignore them completely but not hiss as much.

Her behavior is pretty normal, I think, the kittens are a new thing so she's not sure what to think of them. Usually cats get used to kittens after some time, but keep an eye on her when she is around them for now, and don't force her to get close to them, she'll likely become frightened and attack. Just give her some time and she should warm up to them.
