I am feeding my 13 week old kitten dry food (he's about 3 lbs. and I feed him Science Diet for Kittens), and from advice taken from my vet and from the label on the food bag, I'm feeding him 2-3 times per day, a total of 1/2 cup of food per day. Every time I feed him he scarfs the food down like a pig. Is he starving or just piggy? Should I be feeding him more? Should I just keep refiling his bowl until he's full and then refil every time it's empty? Or will that make him fat?

Science Diet is the most expensive ($2.05 per lb) of the WORST cat foods you can feed your kitten.

For a lower or comparable price you can feed your kitten Eagle Pack, Natural Balance($1.66 per lb), Felidae ($2.10 per lb, Solid Gold($1.50 per lb.) or CA Natural at $2.40 per lb. Nature's Logic is $2.60 per lb., that has duck and salmon, it is also 38% protein as compared to the SD kitten which is only 33%.. Real salmon, not salmon flavoring. These foods use human-grade meat in their formulations not by-product meat as in the SD. They use brown rice, millet, oat, barley etc. for their fillers not the fattening corn that is in the SD and the grocery store brands.

Don't use just one of these brands. Rotate around so your kitten gets some duck, turkey and lamb in his diet - not just chicken for his whole lifetime. I don't think anyone has ever overfed a kitten as they are so active they will only eat what calorie intake they need. After neutering and at around a year of age you should be more careful that he isn't getting too much food.

you should feed him as much as he will eat since he is still a kitten. i just leave a bowl of cat food for my cat and replenish it daily. if he starts to look chunky (rounded stomach) then cut down on how much food you put in the bowl. also make sure you play a lot with him so he doesnt get lazy. what kind of cat do you have?
