I hate to say it, but this is a problem that you have created. You did not give enough information about what happened, but I assume you mean the dog went to the bathroom in the crate. Think of it from the dogs perspective- the dog knows not to use the house as the bathroom, you put him in a crate for too long, and he has to relive himself with nowhere to go. I don't think that sounds like too much fun. I understand things can get pretty hectic and schedules change, but the dog needs to be one of the priorities as well. Get a baby gate for your kitchen or bathroom and put the dog in the room with the crate open. Lay down a pee pad(or newspaper) in case of accidents. This way if you are late the dog can relive itself and not have to sit in it. Wash the dogs crate with a bleach solution to help alleviate any smells, you might not smell anything but the dog does. Same for the blanket or towel you put in the crate. I can all but guarantee that when you are gone and the dog is in the enclosed room with an open crate, he will curl up in the crate. You just have to remember, the dog is afraid that you will leave him in there for to long again and he really, really, really doesn't want to sit in that mess! Giving him the option of going into the crate himself, for his own comfort, will make him unbelivably comfortable with the crate again. Dont force him into the crate, it will only breed resentment. I hope this helps and doesnt happen again. Sorry to be so blunt, it is not directed at you. Most dog owners would be angry at the dog for shi##ing in its crate and even more angry at the poor thing for not wanting to go back in. You at least took responsability for your actions and took the time to ask for help and advice. Good luck!!

How much too long. 3 hours, or 3 days? And is it absolutely necessary to immediately crate him again now? Here's a guess, not knowing those answers.
