Why is it that a dog will sniff forever before going to the bathroom? We have an acre of ground, and I swear my dog will sniff every inch of it before actually doing her business. Whats the deal? Why cant she just squat and go?

Answers:

As others have said it marks its territory, and it smells all the different smells out there. It doesn't want any other pets to have been around. I know it can be very aggrevating when waiting for them to potty and it seems to have taken forever.

IDK, just marking territory, but why they pick that particular spot is beyond me
That's why I own a cat. lol
A dog can smell much greater than we can, so it is sniffing and smelling things we can not. It is smelling other dogs, cats, and other animals business, and probably wants to do it's bussiness on some other animals stuff to mark it's territory.
It would first adapt to its surrounding to be aware
She wants to see if any other dogs have been around. And if SO re-mark her territory
Whenever a dog poops she's like marking her territory. That's why it takes so long.
Its purely just to mark her territory.
