Anyone have a doggie dooley2007-11-25 2:58:18

Anyone have one? Do they work good? For anyone who doesn't know what they are..Inground system to toss dog poo in instead of bagging it and throwing it in the trash.

Answers:

Only if you do not have too many dogs, big dogs,or dogs that eat a very good diet with hard compact poop.

If you have one or two medium to small dogs it may work. It does work slower in the winter. It does require a moderate amount of upkeep.

We had two Newfies years ago(beofre we got MORE) and we had the one for 4 dogs. It never really worked well for us. It had trouble breaking down the very firm poop also. We tried for about a year.many times having to resort to the "trash", and then we MOVED to a remote location where we can toss it in the woods!

Don't have one, but have been considering this. Will look forward to any comments from people using them.
We use two at our facility.

The great thing about them is that they are convient, outside, and are unobtrusive.

The bad thing about them is that they're basically mini-septic tanks in your yard. They can smell terrible if they're not maintained properly. You have to make sure you add water every day and keep the digester at the proper level.

We're actually hoping to get incinerating toilets in the future to replace these units. The incinerating toilets burn the waste to a fine antisceptic ash that can then be swept away.

I used to have one. It worked fairly well. But my problem was that the soil was clay so it didn't drain well. The water is supposed to drain out from the bottom of the pit into the surrounding soil. I should probably have dug a larger hole and laid a lot of sand or gravel to improve drainage.

I ended up using my own alternate system. I had a compost pile with red earthworms in it. I would dig a hole, put the poo and a few worms, then a layer of dirt. Next cleanup, more poo, worms and dirt. The worms make the poo decompose much faster than if buried without them.
