Are chis the only blanket burrowers2007-11-25 2:58:24

Are chihuahuas the only dog that burrow under blankets to keep warm? Is this a sign of tool use? If it is, could chihuahuas be considered the smartest dog breed? I have a miniature poodle who seems extremely smart, but doesnt ever burrow under blankets. But then he has much longer fur.

Answers:

No, many other dogs burrow under blankets. Many smaller breed dogs were bred to hunt smaller vermin and would burrow into tunnels.so many of those breeds still dig and burrow today.

Burrowing under blankets is not really a sign of tool use, and dog 'smarts' are based on how quickly and accurately dogs learn tasks/commands. Chis are number 67 of 79 on the list.

I work at a Vet clinic that offers boarding services and see lots of blanket burrowers. It tends to be smaller, short haired breeds, but not always chihuahuas. Min-Pins,Rat and Jack Russell Terriers do it, so do some mutt dogs.

I don't know if it's tool use, and I've seen some pretty stupid Chihuahuas, but you never know.

Cheers.

You answered you're own question. More fur=no blankets.

And no, chihuahuas are not that smart. How could they be? Think how tiny their brain is.

Well, Chihuahuas are certainly smart! but my little mutt..looks just like a smaller Benji, burrows under the blankets..

I have seen several dogs use tools..they are smarter then many credit them to be..

i dont think it even has anything to do with intelligence. its called staying warm. my dachshund burrows ((literally digs into my sheets)) im convinced that its because thats just what his breed does. my dad has a chi thats dumber than a box of rocks. and he burrows too. both of the dogs have short hair. so i think it is just the dogs' way of making up for their lack of fur to keep warm.
my minpin is a blanket burrower, summer and winter!

we rescued a minpin that had been hit by a car and the

first night he jumped in the bed and dove under the

covers, so they must all do it

My jack russell burrows under the covers every night. He's always done it, even in Summer. I think it's more a case of the animal wanted to be as close to their owner as possible than anything else
Nope, our dachsund is a burrower. Short haired.
