Not sure about golden Rev's but I hear golden retreviers are smart enuff. they are also hyper active dogs.
You can start training a dog the minute you have it.
I think the smartest dogs are golden retrievers, german shepherds, border collies and Jack Russell terriers. Smart dogs get very bored though, so they need to be kept busy or they can do a lot of damage. You can start housebreaking immediately, just remember to be patient, and that puppies are just like babies, they need lots of love and affection.
Any dog can be a smart dog as long as you are prepared to put the training in right from the start, Gun dogs are especially smart with training but remember the Gundogs, Border collies etc will get bored easily if no constantly stimulating thier brains this is when it can become aggressive, Good luck!
Golden Retrievers are as stupid as they day is long (think dumb blonde), but they are good natured and very trainable, so they make good pets.
