Can I stop my dog from doing this2007-11-25 2:59:40

We have a year old Yorkshire Terrier and lately he has been doing what all male dogs do. He likes to hump on everything. It is hard to explain to my little girl exactly what he is doing, because I am not ready to have a 1000 questions about it. I have just told her that he is rubbing his stomach on her or on whatever he is doing it on. Is there some way of breaking him of this? Would getting him fixed take care of this situation? I would appreciate any and all suggestions you may have.

I have Yorkies. Male dogs of any breed are prone to do this. My vet says it is their way of showing dominance and to let you know you are in his territory. (alot of people assume it is just horndogging) Big Misconception. You do NOT have to have him FIXED to stop this. It is natural and once he thinks you believe him, he will stop. Has he been in your home long?? My older dog does this to everyone or thing that comes into our house. We thought the same as you. I was worried but the vet assured me it wouldn't last long. He did it when I first got him also. I just told him "NO" in a harsh tone every time he did it and held his stare. Eventually all you have to do is just say "Riley, NO!" and he will stop. Good luck. I would get him fixed before it becomes a habit for him then u will never get him to break it.

Getting him fixed would have taken care of this for sure. That is if you had him fixed before he developed the urge to hump. At this point, it may not be too late, but it may not cure it either. Talk to your vet, he/she will probablly recomend it still. There are a lot of benefits other than humping it helps with as well. Good luck. may be time to have "the talk" with your daughter.

why dont u cure his urge by letting him mate with some neighbors dog?ask them 1st.

Get him neutered AT ONCE! Make an appointment with the vet today! If this becomes a habit, he might continue even after neutering, as a sign of dominance. But I suppose at 1 year old he'll stop it after being fixed. If you are worried about the surgery, I am telling you, he won't even know anything happened to him! It is so easy for males.
