Can someone tell me how long a dog is in heat and how will i know she is no longer in heat2007-11-25 3:00:12

I have a female dog and was just wondering how long she will be in heat and how will i know its over. Please let me know asap. i'm going crazy.

Females go into heat about every 6 months. and the heat lasts for 21days.

The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks.

The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen.

Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter

. Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred.

While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies. I will also lower her risk to several types of cancer.

1 week coming into heat

1 week in heat

1 week going out of heat

the time they are most vunurable is that week of being in heat she can still get pregnant anytime during the 3 weeks its that middle week she will not fight getting mated.

My dog would be in heat for approximately two weeks, twice a year. By the time the bleeding begins, it's half over, according to my vet.
