Cat food for dogs Will it hurt them, how to get them to stop2007-11-25 3:00:19

I just adopted 2 dogs from my local shelter. A male 3 month old Jack Russell/Beagle(owner surrender) and a 1 year old female Cocker Spaniel(stray). I also have a cat and we leave her food out all day. like always, my 2 dogs wont stop eating it. I've tried everything, I have no where else to put it except up, but then my cat wont eat.. HELP me!

Have you considered separating the food bowls? We have 2 cats and one of the cats will eat the other's food if we don't separate them.

You may not be able to leave out kitty's food bowl all day with the dogs around. She may have to get used to eating once in the morning and once at night. We do that with our cats and they seem to be fine.

If you are very concerned and want more advice, ask your vet or even the techs at the vet. They may have some good ideas for you, too.

It won't hurt for them to sneak a little every now and then, but it's not good for them to have on a regular basis. Too much fat and protein.

Why won't your cat eat if you put it up high?

Either put your cat's bowls in a room that the dogs don't have access to, or feed your cat, give it 10-15 minutes to eat and pick up whatever leftovers there are. I don't like freefeeding too much anyway because it can cause cats to get fat.

You have to seperate it - there is too much protein in cat food for dogs and it will show in either a weight problem or failing organs. If you have a room where you can cut a hole in the door (basement) put it there. the dogs will eat it if they can reach it

Cat food is not properly balanced for a dog - and it can give them diarrea..ick! Plus - what is your poor cat getting to eat?
