Chewing Problem
My dog has a chewing problem. Shes still young, so it was expected. I was wondering if anyone knows of those sprays that they sell at petco/walmart/every other store that supposedly stop dogs from chewing in areas. Do they work, or are they just crap? Her teeth are all in, so its not a teething issue. Ive bought her every type of bone/rawhide out there, but she prefers wood, especially the wood on my baseboards. And for all the jerks out there - I love my dog and Im not killing her (Ive seen some disturbing answers out there).
Answers:Well, this is just my experience, but one of my dogs was a chewer when she was a puppy and she tore up the lining/skirt of my couch and I had to hot-glue it back together. After that, I bought some of that spray and sprayed the whole corner of the couch and she stopped - coincidence? Who knows!
if you can bear vinegar smell try dropping a little vinegar on thing he most like chewing dogs hate that smell and taste
put a cone on his head
I have found you take red pepper and put it on the wood, make sure there is water out, when the dog goes to chew on the wood it gets that taste and doesn't want to try it again! Its work wonders for a lot of people !
well i had the same problem out of my pup a few months ago, and those sprays that cost like $20 at the store didn't do a thing, my dog got used to the taste of it quickly and it stopped working, and we bought every different kind that they had, and my dog got used to the taste of each one in about a week. I don't know if your dog will react the same, but that is just my personal experience, as far as the chewing goes, my only guess would be that she'll grow out of it (mine did), and you have to scold her each time you catch her chewing something in the house, and praise her each time she's chewing what she's supposed to be chewing. it will not be an easy journey, and it will take a little time and patience, but she'll get the hang of it. it only took my pup about a month and a half to get it through his head what was happening. and you might also want to check and make sure that she has ALL of her teeth. she might still be missing some in the back. Have fun!!
Missy Joy is right. Red pepper is the only thing that would stop my dog. The sprays didn't work at all.
Bitter Apple is an awesome product..
Would have been handy to know what breed she was. If its definitely not teething issues its usually a boredom related thing. Its impossible to occupy their minds constantly so they just amuse themselves. If she's chewing while you are around then you have to be super vigilant, try and find something else, anything, that she enjoys instead. Leaving her at home, or anywhere alone, is a sure way of making a dog chew. Some breeds(spaniels for example) are predisposed to this sort of thing due to their temperament. Find some info on breed characteristics.
Or you could just give her a stick!!
Collie types are quite highly strung sometimes, even described as neurotic! The more excercise the better, at least two walks a day of no less than half hour each, maybe more if you dont live somewhere where she can run around alot. This helps to dispel excess energy and reduce chewy tendancies.
