Chewing trouble

Chewing trouble2007-11-25 2:59:52

My puppy has a serious chewing problem.

Regardless of how many toys he has to play with or chew on or how many treats he gets, as soon as we leave him alone (even for 5 minutes) he is chewing on the furniture, the walls, the carpet, everything!

I thought he would grow out of this bad behavior, but he is 9 months now and still doing it. I scold him, but it doesn't work well because he already knows he has done something wrong - I walk in the house and before I even see anything he puts his head down and his tail between his legs and looks pitiful.

Any suggestions?

The visual of your dog looking guilty just gave me a chuckle- sounds cute in a bad sort of way. You can try Bitter apple spray- they sell it at most pet stores, it is all natural and recommended by dog trainers. It is a spray that you can put on things he frequently chews and it has a bitter taste that deters them. You can spray it anywhere with no damage, with my in laws dog, them just shaking the bottle when he has something makes him drop it. Also, consider the breed of dog you have. Some dogs chew when they are nervous or bored. Very bright dogs are often destructive because they need more stimulation. Running him non stop when you are around so that when you are gone he is happy for some peace might help. Good luck!!

Puppies don't usually grow out of this problem until at least 2 years of age. I suggest obedience training. PetSmart usually does it at a reasonable price.
your pup is bored - most chewing problems come from a lack of mental stimulation..
