Chihuahua Not Eating2007-11-25 2:59:54

I have a male and a female chihuahua. My female recently had three puppies. Since the puppies were born, my male has been refusing to eat or not eating enough. He is acting normal in every other way. Before the puppies arrived, I had no problem with him eating. I don't understand why this is happening all of a sudden, because he is not acting sick at all and is extremely active. He is acting like he's hungry and wants to eat, but the second you put his food down, he just sniffs it and walks away. Has anyone had this problem with their dog? If so, how did you solve it? My veterinarian say's that this is normal behavior for a male, after female companion gives birth, and to give him a few more days and he should return back to normal after a while, and if not to give him a call back. Any other views would be truly appreciated. Thanx P.S. Serious Answers Only Please!

Your vet is right. My male pug is very attached to his ladies. When someone gives birth he often howls and won't eat because he is separated from her. He does get over it, and a dog won't starve itself to death. So just leave his food out, and when he's ready to eat he will.

No, your vet is right it is okay and normal for dogs to go off their feed, keep feeding his normal diet, as thing will return to normal before you realize it, the best advice is advise from a vet, (O: I am glad you have spoken to one as most people ask a question, and take the advice from some one they do not even know.

leave the food out for a while and put the other dogs in a diff room.he'll eat it sooner or later

I have a male and female Chihuahua also.

Sometimes one will feel a little left out, usually it is my female. I take her aside, away from Pancho, and hand feed her. I make her do tricks for her food. She loves the special attention.

It's normal, especially in Chis. They are a strange bunch of dogs. Normally the male doesn't eat when bitches are in heat though, not so much after whelping. I wouldn't worry though, like I said, Chis are a strange bunch.
