Chihuahua Seizures
Has any one has the experience with their Chihuahuas having seizures? Are they prone to seizures? Are there any known treatments?
Answers:How old is the dog? Has he been doagnosed by the vet? Different things can cause seizures in Choihuahuas. Hydrocephalus(water on the brain), hypoglycemia(low blood sugar), and epilepsy. Hydrocephalus and epilepsy can be controlled with meds. Hypoglycemia can be kept at bay with free feeding your chi and giving him nutrical at least twice a day.
I give mine Potassium Bromide twice a day. He has epilepsy and hasn't had a seizure since and its been several years.
Any dog can have seizures, they can sometimes be controlled with medications.
Interesting question, my neighbor has a chihuahua and he has seizures. He has always had them since he was a puppy. My neighbor has monitored the dog but there doesn't seem to be a pattern as to when he might have one. She will often call me to come and help her when the dog does have one as it terrifies her. I don't know if it is something that is common with the breed though.
out of my 4 chis, 3 of them have seizures. one of them is on phenobarbitol twice a day to control them. the vet saysthere are many reasons why a dog might have seizures.
it is frightening to see, i was in panic mode when i first encountered seizures. but now have been through so many.i still worry, but usually don't panic.
it can be life-threatening if they have multiple seizures, or prolonged seizures.meaning more than 5 minutes. a dog's temperature goes up when they have these seizures.
just be calm around them, keep them calm. best place is on the floor away from anything that can harm them.
