Chihuahua male (2 years old) poops and pees on the floor only at night Please help2007-11-25 2:59:53

I have a very well behaved chihuahua other than this issue. He has been potty trained if in the presents of people. He will never go if me or my wife are around. If not around however, or if we are sleeping, he will go on the carpet, usually in the same places. We sleep in an upstairs bedroom, and where he goes out to potty is downstairs. He never pees or poops upstairs. We have stopped feeding him and giving him water around 5:30 everyday. We take him to the bathroom before we go to bed. Nothing seems to work. I really don't want to have to get up in the middle of the night every night. I did that enough when he was a puppy. And we can't make him stay in his room at night, because my wife won't let that happen, and even if she did he would bark ALL NIGHT because he is never in his room when we are around. Please help.sorry the question was so long.

Answers:

First, get your carpet professionally cleaned - the scent will keep drawing him to it. Second, you will need to crate him, or put up a gate at the door so that he cannot get out of the room to go downstairs. Third, he is a tiny dog and may have a bladder problem - he should be checked by a vet to ensure there is not a medical issue that should be addressed rather than a behavioral issue. Fourth, if the medical status is given a clean slate, aside from cutting off his access to that area, try a doggy litter pan, sold in most large dog stores, and line it with newspaper, grass, puppy piddle pads, or try something else that he would be familiar with, and leave it in the room where he is sleeping. Put some dabs of urine in the litter pan to get him familiar with its purpose.

The dog has his own room? U need to crate him, or keep picking up poop and having ur house smell like pee Remind your wife he is a dog and let her watch the dog whisperer

He may have something like seperation anxiety. is someone usually around to keep him company during the day? Is he allowed to sleep in your bedroom? If not, that may help. You also mentioned that he usually poops or pees in the same area -- you may want to try moving his food and water dish so that they are near the area. It may help because animals are reluctant to go to the bathroom near where they eat.

I think your dog is just shy about going to the bathroom when peple are around and looking my cat does that she gets nervous maybe that is what's happening to your dog
