Cold Kennel cough
My 2.5 year old APBT is sneezing quite a bit more than usual. His nose is wetter than usual, especially coming out of his nostrils? Could this be a cold or somethng more serious? He was recent at the SPCA and stayed with them overnight to be neutered. Could this be kennel cough? They asked me if I wanted to vaccinate him for this but told me it wasn't necessary if he wasn't going to be kennelled.
I plan on calling his vet but seeing as how it's so late, it will have to wait until the morning.
Answers:Kennel cough is very common in shelter situations. If your dog was exposed to KC it usually manifests about 7 to 9 days after exposure. Your vet can prescribe antibiotics to shorten the course of the infection and minimize the chance of pnemonia. He should not be exposed to other dogs to minimize their risk.
I am surprised they told you that the bordatella vaccine was not necessary unless he would be kenneled. All dogs ought to have the bordatella vaccine every six months at least. I would go back and request it. You of course should get him to the vet soon in case he has picked up a small virus. Hope all goes well:)
here is a site all about kennel cough.. tend to be more like a dry cough..hope it helps:) could of easily picked it up at the SPCA.. it is contagious
take to your vet!
It's understandable that you are concerned. It is hard to know what is wrong with your sweet pet because they can't communicate with us. Like you I have a deep love for animals so when they don't feel could I get scared a little. It could be anything. It could be kennel cough or it could be a cold. It would be real easy for your pet to get something from another animal while at the SPCA. All it takes is one animal wheezing and coughing, that can spread in the air. The SPCA is a fantastic organization but a lot of times they end up with sick animals. If I were you I would call the vet, tell them the symptoms and ask what they think. Worse case scenario you are being too cautious. Good luck.
You will need to take him to the vet. Has he had any vaccinations? Kennel cough is normally that-- a dry cough. But there are other upper respiratory infections that a dog can get without vaccinations and would have needed to have had them for a few weeks before they did any good. You could possibly try to have in the bathroom if you take a hot shower or something. The steam may help him to breath better but this would only be a temporary thing. He most likely needs antibiotics. Get him in to see the vet as soon as you can and good luck! By the way, Kennel Cough or Bordetella is a good idea to get anyway, you never know when you will need it or wish you had gotten it.
for future reference if a shot is offered I would take, my dog got a canine flu and was one of the ones that survived locally they believe due to her already having the distemper and bordertella, am a bit surprised that she was allowed to stay / go without you proving this as we have to do this just for a visit to the groomers and many hotels also insist on this.mind you that said my pit bull is also sneezing more than normal and the vet said it was just allergies..
