Collie showing aggression - how do I stop it2007-11-25 3:00:23

I rescued two pure bred Tri-Colored collies that had been surrendered to a kill shelter. They are both females and raised together (2 1/2 years and 1 1/2 years). One is a rough coat and one is a smooth coat. The smooth has started growling and barking at the rough. She has even attacked her a couple of times. She is fine as long as none of us are near the rough or they are outside together. How do I break her of this? I have two children and don't want to run the risk of them being in the middle of an attack. Other than the growling and aggression, she is a wonderful dog. Please, any serious (non-violent) advice is appreciated.

time outs for the dog(s). really-firm tone and separate the dogs. Have a penned area/laundry room/gated area. Firm tone-separate them. Water hose? If it is an actual fight. High pressure hose in between them so you don't get bit.

are they spayed? if not get that done ASAP

take them BOTH to Obedience lessons for socialization - seek professional help in your area. it too hard over the internet

Any idiot who suggests "TIME OUTS" for a dog is so inept as to be unbelieveable.

What - the dog is going to so sit in isolation, think about what it did, figure out why it was unacceptable and and decide not to do it again?? OH PLEASE - GIVE IT A REST!!

Sorry but you are going to have to intervene between these and be the alpha. Guess what the Alpha dog - the boss dog in the pack - does in order of escalating discipline? It lifts a lip, rumbles in its chest, growls, body slams into the miscreant and snarls and snaps at the air, knocks the culprit down and stands over them, grabs the naughty one by the side of the neck or face and bites - but not hard enough to puncture, just pinch.
