Could my dog be diabetic
My mother in law had a diabetic dachund (sp?). My mixed breed has been acting really weird. She drinks a lot of water, needs out a lot, and has watery stools. She seems to have the same energy level, is not lethargic, but she is very picky about DOG food. In fact, she won't eat most of it. If I cook her chicken or beef with rice, she eats it and she doesn't seem to have as many movements, or drink nearly as much water. She has lost a lot of weight, but was overweight to begin with from table feeding and low exercise. She is not underweight but the drop has been pretty fast. No vet open on the weekend, and she seems content.
Answers:Sounds like she needs to have some bloodwork done. Increase urinating and drinking could be diabetes, but that's not all it could be..it could be a number of things, especially when you add the rapid weight loss to the mix. Get an appointment with the vet asap to check out some bloodwork. I have my dogs blood checked every year, bc dogs bloodwork could change in as little as a few weeks to mos.try to get her on just the dog food. Dont give her anything else until you know what is wrong with her! She will get hungry enough to eat. Adding things to her diet will also give her the watery stool.
Get the vet to do a urine dip test.
If you need an emergency vet. Most vets have an emergency number on their answering machine. I wouldn't take advice from people on the net on how to treat the dog on your own. Do get medical attention immediately. The dog can not be diagnosed until tests are taken by a competent vet. Please don't hesitate, move quickly, you don't know what is going on in the little ones body.
Increased drinking (polydypsia) and increased urination (polyuria) are common signs of a handful of disease. Renal disease, diabetes mellitus, Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism).. she will probably be okay until Monday when you can get her into the vet for a physical and some bloodwork.

This does not sound like an emergency. Take her to the vet first thing Monday morning and have her checked for diabetes if you are worried.
My dog is diabetic and it sure sounds like your dog is having symptoms of the disease, you need to take it to the vet asap, to get a blood test that will show you immediately if she is diabetic, those are definite signs of diabetes lots of drinking and urinating loss of weight all are signs.
