Crate training ineffective for Jack Russell puppy Suggestions2007-11-25 3:00:29

I can't crate train mine it makes her cry ALOT, so i have set aside a small part of a room for her with some paper and it seems to work a bit better for me, at least if she has an accident she isn't covered in her own filth.

Some dogs crate training just doesn't work.

the crate should be her safely zone. no-one wants to poo in their own bed. at 4 months old her bladder is only so big. four or five hours is a long time for a baby. if her crate is too large for her she will think that is what the extra room is for. she should only have enough room for her to turn around, a blanket and a toy. my pup has a stuffed bunny for company. there is no food in the crate just a drink. check on her food. is she eating more than 2 x a day. breakfast and supper . the odd puppy cookie for a treat. or maybe it's too much protein for her for now. kinda like too much beer. and don't forget the old reliable. rub her nose in it and toss her sorry little butt out the door. lol

You might want to check her food, and take her to the vet to see if she is allergic to anything. Her potty schedule sounds irregular and if it is as bad as you say it is their might be a worm of some type in her intestine. As for crate training, get some potty mats from any pet store and put them inside the crate until your puppy can hold herself. I had this problem with a boxer I had once. She would just go to the bathroom all the time. She peed on my couch twice while just standing there. It was frustrating. We got the mats and slowly just made her wait go outside. If she went in her crate we simply pulled out the mat and put a new one in. The more you show that you make the rules of when you go out and when you come in, she should start getting the idea. Also check the amount of food you are giving her. Puppies will not stop eating until all the food is gone, they haven't learned to control thier eating habits yet so try giving her smaller portions.
