Cushings Disease in St Bernard

Cushings Disease in St Bernard2007-11-25 3:00:30

My 9 yr old St. Bernard was diagnosed with Cushings Disease. She was given a loading dose of Lysodren and responded quickly in 7 days. She was tested again and the test showed that the loading dose was successful. She is now on 1000mg of lysodren once a week. She did well for about 3 weeks and is going down hill again. The hair on her flanks is comming out in clumps, and she is weak in her hind end and trips over her feet and stumbles. She is drinking alot again and getting up numerous times during the night to go out. She is also deep sleeping more than usual. I don't want to have her tested again because she takes the stress from the test very hard and it takes at least a week for her to recover. Her appetite is good. Any suggestions?

Answers:

We had a Spitz that had it. We put him on REALLY good food - something the vet had recommended (but it wasn't Science Diet) and he responded amazingly.

Their food needs are really different once they contract this disease - you must feed them accordingly - I cannot stress this enough.

Our Spitz's hair was awful, just like yours, and with the new diet, his hair was positively gorgeous - even better than before.

Eventually we did have to put him down - this was due to aggression caused by the disease. You need to read as much as you can about the disease because it does alter their behavior and you need to understand that your pet may act differently than before.

Good luck.
