Do Flander des Bovier dogs make good pets Are they suitable for an older person2007-11-25 3:00:39

Would they be too much dog for an older person, say 60ish yrs old.Do they require much grooming and are they a good personality. They look mean but I heard that they are friendly and love children.

Answers:

We had a bouvier and just loved her. They do get large and can be head strong. Our dog had the "working coat" that was short and curly and we did have to take her to the groomer to have her stripped periodically. You can learn to do it at home, but it is very time consuming. If the older person is in good health and likes to take walks, the dog would be great. Scooter was a sweet, gentle giant. I never saw her act mean towards anyone that we knew, BUT, she was very much of a watch/guard dog. No one came near our home unless we knew them. More than once she would put herself between us and the newcomer and stare them down until we acknowledged them and she knew they were okay. She was wonderful with our newborn daughter and kept guard over her as she grew. I would love to have another one some day.

they are too energetic for retired owners.

Their personality is als suspect. Besides a work dog, they were used for police work too.

For a low energy dog- I recommend an english bulldog. Though they are awfully gassy (mine is asleep on my feet)

Also, your local dogpound will typically allow you to take a dog for a few nights to see if their temperament matches yours. My boxer/greyhound mix mutt is extremely clean (shorthair) and loves easy walks in the evening.

loyal dogs, can be protective, moderate-high grooming, ok for older person as long as trained properly. May be too large for elderly person for taking them for walks if they pull.
Yeah. A Bouvier is a big strong dog and their personality can be a little suspect. They are rather suspicious of strangers and not always reliable with other animals or strange dogs. Their coat is not too bad as long as you have them regularly stripped at the groomers. Unless you have lots of dog experience I would avoid them to be honest.
I know someone who breeds them. They need ALOT of grooming and can be quite a handful. I have seen some nasty temperments as well including aggression towards people. I wouldn't recommend them for a family with kids, nor for someone with a soft personality or a novice owner.

A couple of theirs got out and went into the barn and completely slaughtered all their pigs. So much for being a herding breed.
