Well, the first thing to know is that a free dog isn't free. You have to expect $1000 a year in medical bills and be ready to handle a $1000 emergency, should the situation or illness arrive. This doesn't mean you will spend $1000 every year, but if you can't afford to buy from a reputable breeder, then you can't afford a dog.
The second thing to know is that you need to research the breed. If you don't know how to spell the breed name, then you haven't done any homework on the dog. This means you aren't a good potential owner for that breed. A resopnsible dog owners reads all she can on the breed she is interested in, rather than just want one because they are 'cute'.
The third thing you have to realize is that no dog "doesn't grow". They all grow and mature. Even if they only reach 5 pounds, that is certainly bigger than the 4oz they were when they were born.
Next, realize that Yorkies are toy breed terriers. They bark. They can be hard to potty train for some people. They break easily when young. They live a long time (where will you be in 15 years??). They can be protective.
The only way to know that any given dog will be fine around your cat is to adopt or rescue an adult one. This is great because then you'll know in advance how big the dog will be and if it's potty trained. These aren't all old sick dogs, many are young dogs whose owners couldn't handle the responsibility.
