Do older dogs get depressed when a puppy moves in And what can I do to help2007-11-25 3:00:44

I have a 9 year old cocker spaniel and about 2 weeks ago my sister moved in with her 1 year old yorkshire terrier. My sis and her puppy are sleeping in the same room with me while we get the other room cleaned out and ready. My dog who always slept with me, wont sleep with me anymore. He sleeps in the hallway. He seems depressed and not as "happy go lucky" as usual. He's still eating normal. Should I keep them seperated as often as possible? What can I do to ensure that he's happy the rest of his life and always feels like my #1? Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

Dogs do not get depressed. They are not humans.

Yes, definately. When I had my first baby, my one dog slept in her cage for weeks. They had always slept in the bed with me, but since then they never will stay in the bed and always sleep on the floor and it's been 6 years. A new puppy, kitten, baby, etc. will definately have an effect on your dog.
Older dogs sometimes feel replaced by a younger dog. Spend twice as much time with the older than the younger. If he still is not "happy go luck" don't wory, how would you like to suddenly have a much younger room mate that has way more energy than you? Give him time and he will eventualy get used to the idea!
Your dog is insecure..keep them together or they will never get used to each other. If you keep them seperate that encourages your dogs behavior and to him you are accepting this behavior.
maybe he thinks that he is being replaced especially if you are now spend "his" time with the new dog in the house. Find activies that you can involve both of them in. It should help your dog get used to his new friend (wanted or not) and maybe will cheer him up to have someone to play with. Dogs are hurd animals and it is their nature to want a companion. And "yes" your dog can get depressed. Mine did when I had to give away on of her pups that we kept for 6 months. She moped around for like 2 weeks. It saddened me to see her just lay at the gate and cry and paw at the fence to get out and go look for her. But lots of love and attention should correct the situation. Good luck.
Dalmation Rescue is wrong, but that's okay. He doesn't really know what he's talking about.

Your dog may be sad that there is some competition for your attention, but he'll get over it. Just continue to play with him and he'll figure out that you still love him just as much.
