Do pomeranians get too hot in Florida2007-11-25 3:01:10

I'm thinking about getting one, but not sure about it in this hot climate.

I've lived in Florida since 1975, and it's too hot and humid in the summer for any dog, which is why my dog lives in the house and only goes outside to go potty. If you plan on having the dog as a house dog, then he or she will be fine.

Usually Florida gets enough sea breeze not to be too hot. but You can always give the pup a haircut-it is okay to do that. Just don't shave them and put them out in the sun. They will burn just like you.

I have a Siberian Husky and he's fine here. I'm on the East Coast of Central Florida. Do not leave it outside all of the time, make sure it has access to lots of fresh water and please don't shave the dog. The fur acts like insulation, keeps it warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Shaved down dogs can actually get sunburned or have about with heat stroke.

It ran well over a hundred degrees at least 40 days each summer, where I used to raise Poms, and they all did just fine..they were brushed regularly, so the air-flow goes through their coat, and none were ever clipped..If they were allowed to matt, they would likely get too hot..

It should be perfectly find as long as it has access to water at all times and isn't outside running hard for extended periods of time. Just don't shave it. The undercoat in spitz-type dogs will actually insulate them from the heat and protect them from sunburn and overheating.

Pomeranians, and all small breeds, should be kept indoors. There are many dangers outside for a small dog to worry about, temperature is only part of it.
