As long as they dont smell like mold or mildew,,the same goes for pet food.
sum smell sum dont it depends on wat kind u buy ur dog. but their not good for ur dog so u should stop giving it to him/her. dogs cant digest rawhide and so it causes stomach problems. go buy ur dog a nice "soup bone" in the meat section of a grocery store. its really good for them.
it's a dried hunk of compressed skin, bone and cartlidge. ofcourse it smells bad.

Long answer-I noticed my big guys bone was really smelly after we got him and I happened to ask a friend who works at the vet. When i brought him in for his first visit the doc looked at his teeth first thing. Sure enough gingavitus. Now that he is in a good home eats well and gets teeth brushing he is much better. Also, rawhides are possibly dangerous, but I have no real first hand info on that. Sorry.

Rawhide bones do have a scent to them. I don't give my pets those. They eat them or swallow them after they get it all wet and unrolled . Can cause a major problem inside the digestive tract and very costly . I know ,years ago my dog almost died from one.Never again..
New they will have a slight smell, nothing to strong. Once a dog starts chewing, well there is where the smell kicks in. Bacteria start to grow at a terrific rate and then the odor kicks in. I don't let my dogs have rawhide for more then a day or two at most, and then I throw them away. Any dog toy will start to smell if it gets covered with bacteria. The bacteria will not hurt a healthy dog. It is a good idea to throw out old smelly toys.
Usually no smell that I ever noticed, even when they were being chewed.

I've always noticed they smell like whatever "flavor" they are until the dog starts chewing on them then i agree they do stink! Well imagine, its just dried out cow skin being chewed on!
It just depends on the brand some smell and some don't also if they are flavored they seem to smell worse
