PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THE ADVICE of medicating the dog. Depending on the size of the dog you could make it very very ill.

I recommend you take the dog to a professional groomer and have them show you/teach you how to do this with a minimum of fuss. Or, a veteranarian. Even a groomer at Petco would be a good start.

Give him a benadryl capsule l hr. before grooming. ONLY ONE. This will calm him down and make him drowsy. The way to feed it to him is to wrap the capsule in a little cheese or meat and he won't notice he just took medicine.

You're giving in too easily! Since you are the one grooming him, it's time he understands to cooperate. There's no reason you can't control him with very stern commands, like "Sit", "Stay" and the ever popular "NO", if you have no success after several attempts consider this the last home grooming and go to a professional. They have the experience and knowledge to get the job done without a lot of agitation.

My dog is normally very calm except when it comes to clipping his nails. The only thing that has worked is waiting until he is in a comfortable position before starting to clip his nails, talking to him in a soothing voice, praising him after every nail, and taking a break between paws to petting him.

Definitely DON'T medicate him just to groom him. There is a natural remedy for dogs that become highly agitated called Rescue Remedy. This does not make them drowsy just makes them less frightened.
