A back yard breeder generally works on a smaller scale, but will produce puppies with little thought for their soundness or temperament, just with their minds on the money.

Pups from either of these sources are likely to have multiple health and mental problems. They will likely be full of worms and fleas, and will often die in the first few weeks in their new home. Those that do survive may have long-term health problems and require a lot of work to overcome their mental problems.

In order to avoid buying from either of these sources, you should always see the puppies with their mother, and in the pen where they actually live. Never buy from a breeder who is not prepared to show you the living conditions of their dogs. A good breeder will have all the information you need about the worming, vaccination and feeding of your puppy, and will be able to offer support and advice if it is needed later on.

A puppy mill is when a person(or people) have several different breeds of dogs(it can also be a lot of just one or two breeds) and they just breed and breed any time the dogs come in to heat. The dogs are usually very unsocialized, inbred and have many health problems. They also usually live in horrible conditions. A lot of the dogs that you buy in pet stores come from puppy mills.

A backyard breeder is someone who owns purebred animals and will breed them just because they are purebred. They don't do any health testing on the animals or look at the family history(not sure if that is the right term) of the dog. Not neccesarily the same as a puppy mill because a lot of times, the dog is a beloved member of the family and the owner just doesn't know any better.
