Do you think it is cruel to put your 12 year old dog2007-11-25 1:13:44
it is getting snappy around young toddler and we are going away for a while and no one is willing to look after it.
Answers:Well if its whining all the time I take it you're not treating his arthritis, and if you are you aren't using the right meds. The dog is obviously wary of children and will be a danger to the child. Perhaps given his health and issues with kids, it may be time to have put down. 12 is pretty old for a dog and quality of life is extremely important as they grow older. Personally I'd say its time.
kennel club.
Put it where? If you mean put it down, then I suggest some discipline and correct training. You could send it to kennels to be looked after and a dog should NEVER be left unsupervised with children anyway. It sounds the dog is an inconvenience to you.
yes, it is cruel. put the kid away instead
train the dog. I am sick of people who get dogs and don't train them then have problems when a child is involved.. the dog is part of your family to and it is your problem he is snappy. try and re train him or re home him to a good home with owners that do know the responsibility of having a dog. it is a shame people are too lazy to train there dogs as children and dogs can become best friends and inseparable.
hire a dog sitter/ house sitter when you go away or take the dog with you.
find a pet sitter ! and use the training can take a empty pop can fill it with say about 15 pennies tape the top of can and each time it gets bad with the toddlers you shake it hard and say no loud and firm . but put it down c;Mon its part of the family.
no.its not cruel.its to old 2 survive
How would you feel when you get old. Your kids will put you away in a nursing home. Just think the next time you get mad at a kid how an old dog feels. Do you like someone to pull on your ears when you don't feel like good.
You can kennel your dog with your vet if they have that kind of facility. I would get a checkup because if the dog's behavior changed, it may be sick. I was there with my 7 yr old lab/mix. One day she was the sweetest thing and the next snappy and growling. She had kidney failure and we didn't know. Her checkup was normal, it just happened suddenly. If there is nothing wrong with the dog, but poses a danger to the child, you may have to consider getting rid(giving away to a home with no children or other animals) of the dog.
permanent solution to temporary problems - and the lazy way out. Not technically cruel, but I'll never place a pup with you, nor most ethical breeders, as you would not be considered a good home.
yes.you should first take it to the vet, if he/she has arthritis there is medicine that will help the pain and make the dog feel much better. It could be something else, too - and the vet will help determine that. As for behavior with children - it is very likely that you have not trained the animal to be around childran AND the children how to treat animals. BOTH need to be done. That is what a good owner and a good grandparent does. As far a s traveling, if you are not able to travel with your pet - find a pet sitter who will take care of it in your own home and follow your routine or board it with your vet or othere accredited kennel - but if you dog is not used to being around other dogs this may be too stressful of an environment for him/her.
