You shouldn't use one and they dont work anyway, I have heard. Try a different way to get the dog to stop. Not by hitting it, by training it and when it does what you want, give him a treat and praise him.

I would not use it to train your dog. If you are training a dog you give it rewards for doing good. If your dog is trying to run away or it is going to hurt someone then Yes I would use the shock collar.

For me a shock collar is a torture device and it shouldn't be used at any point.

If you have problems with your dogs behavior there are other methods you can use to train him.

If you see that your patience and guiding doesn't work, there are training schools that can do that better.

Apart from that, and because a collar is an easy solution, there are collars out there that have the same effect as a shock collar, only they work with smell without torturing the poor creature.

For instance, if the dog has a tendency to bite, this collar can be set to emit a smell every time the dog gets ready to bite. This smell belongs to the citronella family, and it is very distracting and very unpleasant to the dog. The dog associates the smell with his bad habit and he stops it after a while.
