Does anxiety medication for dogs work2007-11-25 3:00:56

Hello, I have a 10 month old rough collie who is very scared of traffic, especially trucks, trains and so on. He has been properly socialized to these things at a young age, but still developed this fear. Professional training is very costly, so someone has suggested all natural remedies for stress sold in specialized pet stores. Do these really work, are they safe?

Answers:

Get ur dog around more traffic and reinforce that he is safe and won't get hurt and PRAISE him! Meds are not the answer unless u want to buy these for the rest of ur dogs life and don't mind that u don't really have "your" dog. Training may be costly but it's only once when meds are forever and therefor costly in the end.

I have never used medications for anxiety on dogs. If your dog has issues with traffic then you need to deal with those issues. The dog has had some type of trauma to bring this on.
I am skeptical about natural remedies and in my experience even prescription medication doesn't do much, and can lead to aggression. Medicating your dog is also costly, and will not solve the problem permanently, if at all. I recommend you bite the bullet and shell out the cash for a trainer. Welcome to pet ownership. If your worried about money make sure you find a good trainer which may cost up front but in the long run you save because you ll actually see results
