Does any one know the best remidey to calm a dog down
My dog is manic, he cannot sit still he is always winig and hyper. Even when he get a 4 hour walk he's still all hyper. I need to clam him down. Can anyone reconed a good remedy. I've tryed a few for the pet store and they didn't work. Please help. He's a chocolate lab if that makes a differents.
Answers:benadryl...no kidding. my dog is high strung too, espectially when me or my husband try to leave. The vet told us to give him benadryl to calm him down. it doesn't hurt dogs, vets recommend benadryl for dogs w/ allergies. If your lab weighs as much as mine (about 60 lbs), the vet told me I can give him 2 -25 mg pills up to 2 times a day. And if that didn't work, to come back and he'd start us on doggy chill pills. I got the generic benadryl (100 count bottle) and it's been working. It takes about 15 minutes to take effect but it does calm him down.
I'd talk to your vet. If a 4-hour walk won't do it, there may be a medical reason or he may need a prescription medication. Your vet can eliminate medical causes. Then after that, work with a professional trainer to address the behavioral problems. He may need medication for awhile until he starts to respond to training, then you may be able to wean him off. Good luck - anxiety in dogs can be challenging.
I don't know. Maybe a nice doggie bed will help and/or brushing and petting him.
Try this product below! It really does work, I have a yellow lab that went nuts when we went to be everynight, so I put this by my bed and it really did help. It's called comfort zone. Good Luck!
To begin don't give him any attention for the first maybe 5 minutes after you come home from work or out. Ignore him completely. After you have checked the mail, put the groceries away etc. you may look at "lab" and casually say hello and give him a pet. When he is calm you may pet him. Also when he gets too rambuncious give him short time-outs in his crate. No more than a minute. When he has calmed down let him out. If he continues to act crazy "to bad" back in the crate for another 30 - 45 seconds. Continue this until he is calm coming out. At that time you may pet him and talk and praise him for being such a good boy. Whenever he gets too crazy either get up and abruptly leave the area, keeping him behind or give him a time out. Only pet him when he is calm. Otherwise he gets no attention. Remember any type of petting, looking at, touching etc. is attention to a dog.
I sing to my dogs, but my husband just tells them"calm down" and both seem to work. All dogs are different. Good-luck.
Take some time. Long slow moderately light strokes from head to tail (top / sides / belly). If he wiggles and tries to play, hold his collar to keep him somewhat controlled (without undo force), and speak softly and gently to him.
