FLY PROBLEMS on my dogs :( Remedies
Yep, the flies seem to go for their ears.
I've seen people put duct tape on their dogs ears to keep the flies off also (ok, these were not the brightest people I knew by a long shot), but it did keep the flys off and probably a little pulled hair was a lot better in the long run.
Go to a farm and feed store. A lot of horse products (now here you're taking flys!) can also be used on dogs and are cheaper and come in large quantities.
They'll probably have the "Flys-Off" too.
As someone just noted, it's available as a spray.
You can get some of that too, but the ointment's better for the ears. It stays on and should last all day.
Now go look at the pesticides. Look and/or ask around what's good for flies. Buy and use a lot of it! Also, buy a 1or 2 gallon (probably a 1 gallon's enough) pump sprayer for application.
How about a screen tent? You could move it around the yard.
I moved from the city with 1/4 acre lot - mainly grass to 12.5 acres in the middle of nowhere.
Had some fly problems in the city. None whatsoever here.
It's the trash around - I'd guess.
All you can do is prevent direct attacks. They'll be back in your yard tomorrow.
Actually, "Off" seems to work just fine on dogs (it stings any raw spots so avoid the ears and face).
Hey. Whatever helps the dogs - I use it. Never had any complaints (or problems).
