I have a chihuahua and he is a little overweight. I can't seem to get him to loose any weight. Is there a good dog food for little guys that will help them? I love to give him treats to. I still want to be able to do that.

Answers:

Try walking him if your already don't, but be sure to not overdo it. Also maybe try breaking his treats in half and give them to him like that, so he can get the same amount of love, with half the calories! Your vet should have a dog food that can help you control his weight. Good luck!

the treats are probably what's doing him in. Back off of the kibble, read teh bag and see how much he should be getting for his size, feed him 1/3 less than that... more exercize, and no more treats. Its just like people, you dont go on a diet to loose weight and still eat cookies. If you really think he needs a treat, offer green beans or carrot sticks

Try Beneful healthy weight. it really helped my dog. and if you give him treats, cut down on them a little.

Have his thyroid checked. Some dogs that just can't lose weight often have a hypothyroid.

If that is not the case, then you just need to feed less and excercise more. And dogs do not need treats, so if he can't lose weight, you are going to have to cut back. Being overweight can take years off your dog's life, so you have to decide if it is more important to you to give treats, or if you'd rather have your dog live a longer healthier life.

Feed him small dog DOG FOOD for overweight dogs - "Iams" brand (eye-ums) makes a good one - your dog is chunky BECAUSE he is eating too many "treats", AND he needs more exersize - yes, it is fun to feed animals people food, but in the long run, you are not doing him any real favors.

You'll have to stop overfeeding him! Get a high quality food formulated for weight loss, and measure it into his bowl twice a day (your vet can recommend the proper amount). Stop the treats...I feed my dogs ONE 10-calorie treat ONCE a day. They don't need those treats, the treats make YOU feel good, they're making your dog unhealthy. The treats you feed your dog need to be included in your dog's daily caloric intake...they're not "freebies" and they often are the biggest contributor to a dog's overweight situation. Talk to your vet about appropriate treats for your dog that won't contribute to his health demise.
