My dog is overweight shey eats right and she runs around all day what should i do2007-11-25 2:11:43Answers:

Cut back a little on the amount of food you are feeding her and give her a little more exercise. Try going to a dog park and walking her daily. If she likes water, swimming is also a great exercise.

All of my dogs have always been slightly overweight, too. However, it's my fault because I just love to feed them.

go walk him
Reduce the amount of food you give her by 20%.
i have that same problem id really like to know that too!

and "jeff" if her dog runs around and still gains weight i dont think that walking is going to do the trick...

gosh i hate smart allecs

Cut back on her feedings and get her a low-fat dog food. If you free feed her (leave food out all day so she can eat when she wants) stop that practice and feed her only once or twice a day - generally once a day is enough for an adult dog. After 10 minutes, take up any food that has not been eaten.

Also take her for regular walks so she gets more exercise. This has the added bonus of giving the two of you extra bonding time.

If it doesn't go in, it cant go on!! Are you counting the treats or just the food? I had a problem with a dog gaining and found out my neighbor was coming over in the afternoon while I was at work giving them treats. I put an end to that. She is elderly and just thought she was being nice to the dogs.
Try walking it another block or two than you'd normally walk it !?! Give it just a`little less foor !! .. Or maybe you can give it small portions of food during the day & a wise choice of an evening meal !!.
My sister used to have a doberman that got kinda heavy, and she talked to the vet and they put her on a special dog food .They also decreased the amount of food, and took her for walks, the weight really came off.Good luck.
Try cutting him/her back by following the feeding guide for his/her size and even then feed twice a day, cutting recommended portion in half. I know it's hard to restrict their food in-take but an over weight dog is not a healthy dog. Like us, they become sluggish and lose their motivation too.
Most likely, you are over feeding her and don't realize it. First, actually measure the amount of food that you are feeding her using a measuring cup (if you don't want to use the ones you use for baking, go buy a cheap plastic one from the dollar store just for the dog). Measure the exact amount of food you want to feed her EVERY time using the measuring cup. Most people just eyeball it and estimate how much they are feeding and they are usually VERY surprised to discover just how much extra they are feeding when they measure it. Look on the dog food bag and read the recommended feeding amount (this is per day according to body weight...not per meal, if you feed twice a day you need to divide that amount in half for each meal). Keeping in mind that dog food companies want to sell dog food and your dog is overweight, start with the smaller amount recommended for your dog's size. It should also be noted that you need to be feeding the amount recommended for your dog's IDEAL weight, not her current weight. If she's 20lbs overweight for example, you should feed her the amount recommended for a dog that weighs 20lbs less than she does.
